Opengovt.org.nz is an open, independent catalogue of Government and Local
Body datasets
http://opengovt.org.nz/cat/about/

This is a really interesting initiative. The search function is not great,
but it remains an attractive looking, grassroots initiative, methodology and
a place to discover, load and download datasets distributed by the community
that are either hosted elsewhere or made directly accessible. No Metadata
though *:(* this is where things get tricky, most grassroots initiatives
miss that trust component. Datasets, like books, need attribution, and to
conduct a reliable analysis with data, datasets need dates, authors,
collection methodologies and so on, otherwise they cannot authoritatively be
used.
